More Fallout from DOGE

Friends who have worked in the corporate world are not dismayed by the wholesale layoffs being imposed on the federal workforce. It’s an everyday occurrence in corporations: terminations for financial reasons – improving the bottom line. Cut first then see what detrimental impact the layoffs create. Companies hire beyond their ability to efficiently use the manpower, so they cull. It’s rare that such efforts occur at this scale with effects felt throughout the customer base: the country. We feel bad for those impacted.

Ukraine is Responsible for Russia's Invasion

President Trump accused President Zelinsky of causing the war with Russia, In effect, threatening Russia such that they felt compelled to invade. And it all could have been stopped with an early deal negotiated between the warring parties: Ukraine giving Russia land back. It sounds ridiculous but when you believe major powers have the right to grab land within their sphere of influence: for example Canada and Greenland. So President Trump’s reasoning makes sense to him and Putin.

Gaza Announcement

President Trump suggested the United States take over the ownership of the Gaza strip and develop it into a Six Flags Over Gaza. All the Palestinians would be moved out of it to make room for rich people from all over. Over course the reaction against his proposal was swift and vehement, except for Israel who probably liked the idea of more land for settlers. But I thinkTrump was floating the idea as a way to wake the world up: this idea is how bad and stupid it can get so everyone come to the table and talk peace and sanity.

Lazy River Bourbon

The Whiskey Reviewer noted something about Lazy River Bourbon that I caught too: no information about the brand is available. It’s a secret. It calls itself a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey being that it is distilled in Kentucky but then it is bottled in California. Why?

Tariffs Update

It appears that after I wrote the blog on Tariffs, President Trump blinked and backed down with the implementation against Canada and Mexico. The 10% tariff against China went ahead while the other two received a thirty day delay. Supposedly our neighbors north and south agreed to our President’s terms and so won his delay. I’ve not heard anything about criteria for 30 days from now. Seems to me it is all about sowing chaos rather than achieving anything.

Retribution

Trump wasn’t kidding when he threatened retribution during the campaign. Over the weekend, henchmen emailed all the FBI agents around the country asking them to fill out a questionnaire that basically questioned their loyalty to the President. The agents were asked what role they played in the multiple investigations on Mr. Trump such as the January 6 insurrection and the purloined classified files in Mar-a-Lago. It is estimated that some 6000 agents were part of the investigation at one point. The threat is that if you were a participant, you’re fired! The media says that the agents were just doing their job; the media is in the sights next.

Freezing Funds

Trump signed an Executive Order effectively stopping the funding of many federal programs such as the USAID, the Veterans Medical system, and Medicaid (at least I think so, lot of confusion as to what is impacted). Of course, the democrats are crying foul but it is are own damn fault for not dealing with the government efficiency problem when we had the chance. Departments are offering civil service employees a chance to depart now with some severance or face possible termination in the Fall. Seems draconian but the national debt is huge, greater than our Gross Domestic Product so the urgency is real.

Tariffs

Tariffs were authorized today on Canada and Mexico at 25% and on China at 10%, The distinction being that Prime Minister Musk does a lot of business with the Chinese, selling them cars, and so he asked Trump to go easier on them. I understand that the purpose of the tariffs is to force the three countries to do more about the drugs coming from their countries and to balance their export-imports with the US. Whatever noble intention he has, it is going to inflate prices.
