Not everyone Appreciates QE2

I’ve seen a few You Tube videos claim this topic and heard people exclaim they weren’t interested in the Queen’s funeral. It is surprising that so many people paid their respects because: the royals don’t pay taxes, their history especially with Diana (see The Crown), it’s not known what the people get in return for guarding the Royal Family, and a lot of former colonies pay honor (maybe cash) to the monarchy as Commonwealth nations. I may have some facts wrong but that is the point, people don’t know the entire story, even if you have watched The Crown!

I think appreciation for the Queen is the history she represents – including the traditions, uniforms, Order of the Garter among several, lineage that can be traced two thousand years, table settings, and old cars. The monarchy has its own rules and order and people can count on it to continue. All the sore spots that people point to in the royal system are known to the new King and I believe he wants to fix them. He’s had a long time to apprentice for this position and he is a man that wants to get things done and improve them. Long Live King Charles III!

Witch Hunt?

Trump Charge with Fraud!

A busy news day today. CNN gleefully breaking the news that the New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, was suing the former president and his adult children for inflating the value of their assets some huge amount. Fox News was simultaneously singing the praise of Governors Abbot and DeSantis for their efforts to wake up the current administration that we have a problem while Newsmax carried the fraud story with the line that President Trump has faced worse. In addition, Newsmax wondered why the charge was only a civil one and not criminal after spending three years on the investigation. Of course, Don Jr. called all this another witch hunt and to be honest, it does feel like we’ve seen this story before: with the Clinton Whitewater investigation that lasted two years until the Monica Lewinsky affair broke and he was impeached.

IRS Conspiracy Theory

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) includes money for the Internal Revenue Service to hire an additional 87,000 people to audit taxpayers. The right thinks this is a not-so-subtle attack by the left on the middle class and wealthy but the (real) President said that no one making under $400,000 on the 1040 Form will be audited (I think the President makes $200k per year). Moreover, the theory is that these guys will be armed and making arrests, furthering inflaming the conspiracy to attack the right. The New York Times says 1% of the new hires will have arrest capability and be armed (Thursday, 8/25/2022) It is estimated that the top 5% of income earners underpay taxes by $300 billion so these auditors should more than pay for themselves and will help pay for some of the other items in the Act. The problem is that the taxes on the wealthy are usually very complicated, comprising many investments sometimes difficult to quantify and collect from. But it’s like that famous bank-robber once said, “I rob banks because that’s where the money is.” Likewise, audit the wealthy because that’s where the money is hiding!

Is this Fake News?

More from Mar-a-Lago

Former President Trump has been busy telegramming his complaints on the DOJ “raid” of his home and the FBI’s complicity. His latest is a story that the lead Special FBI Agent for the Trump investigation was escorted from the building as if he were fired. Trump’s explanation: “(Agent’s) partisan nature of evidence to secure the FBI’s approval to open an investigation into the 45th President in the first place, was also involved in the hiding and suppressing from the Public and the Media, the “Laptop from Hell”, the 2020 Election Scam and so much more!” Can someone explain what he means?

It wasn't too long ago that the FBI was the darling of the Right. Under J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI spied on everyone who smelled communist or subversive. Now roles have switched with the right feeling the heat of the law. I think the men and women of the FBI just do their job to the best of their ability without partisan considerations. The politics are created by the higher ups

Mikhail Gorbachev's Legacy

The news has been full of reporting on the death of Mikhail Gorbachev. He was responsible for ending the cold war between Russia and, well, the rest of the Western World. Sure Reagan urged him to, "Tear down this wall" and that is the moment most remember; but Gorbachev could have maintained the status quo and used his military to keep power and control. He didn't and he did a lot to bring Russia into modern times and remove the chains tying his people down. There are several countries who appreciate their independence resulting from perestroika and glasnost: Ukraine for one, Kazakhstan another. It is telling that Putin didn't attend Gorbachev's funeral, they are opposites. I wonder if Putin was embarrassed.

The Russian people are a great civilization who have contributed much to the world and with more to give. If only they could just be free to excel, out of the shackles of their dictators. Gorbachev almost accomplished it.

Democracy

More Election Concerns

The problem with the Big Lie or the Big Steal, depending on your perspective, is that everyone is going to claim it if they don’t win or even if they do. Our democracy depends on fair and honest elections, believing that the election is fair and honest, and accepting the results. The loser has to vow they’ll do better the next time; not raise a fuss over our process, claiming the election was stolen but instead congratulate the winner. Sixty judges turned away the stolen claims, the election officials validated the results and swore that their State’s system was robust. Voting machines were checked, election workers interrogated, recounts held in a few counties and States; the outcome was the same: no massive fraud, enough to change the winner.

We need a system of government that works towards compromise for the best of the country. No one party has all the answers or all the ideas. That’s why we are set up with the checks and balances of a Congress, Executive and Judicial branches. The politicians need to convince us that their ideas are best for everyone and not a small slice of the population. Our road to a better life has a lot of twists and turns but we’ll get there if we can listen to those with ideas different from our own. Make it so Number Two.

Putin has problems

The people who read between the lines are telling us that the Central Asian conference recently held with China’s President Xi and India’s Prime Minister Moti delivered a stern message to Putin: we are uncomfortable with your war in Ukraine (my words). Both countries still do business with Russia buying oil and gas and other goods which greatly softens the impact of the sanctions that the west imposed. So the fact that these two leaders are concerned sends the right message to the Russian leader to find a way to stop it. The cash that they provide helps to fund his war: paying troops, buying arms, making groceries. The war is affecting both of their countries’ economies and their ability to feed their own people. That can result in political unrest and instability resulting in the loss of their power. Now they’re hurting!

Political Feuding

Sending Migrants to Martha's Vineyard

The latest in the migrant story is that the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, transported ~50 Venezuelan migrants by planes to Martha's Vineyard off the Massachusetts’s coast. The left called it an inhumane political stunt and the right says it is recruiting help from the sanctuary cities for handling the migrants. It’s true that DeSantis had to “borrow” people from Texas to send to the liberal northeast. Could he be charged with kidnapping or human trafficking? They were promised jobs and shelter although the residents of the island didn’t know they were arriving until 20 minutes before landing. It’s also true that the northeast saw this as a southern states problem for their taxpayers and resources to handle. So the governors of Texas and Arizona wanted to share their pain of dealing with all these people.

It seems to me that both sides have made their point and now it is the time to work the issue together. The Republicans probably want tougher restrictions for entering the country and the Democrats want to welcome asylum-seekers much like we did in past mass migrations of Poles, Italians, Irish, Mexicans. There has to be a compromise solution somewhere in there.
